Most air fresheners on the market contain many harmful chemicals including carcinogens such as formaldehyde and benzene.  Although they are in minute concentrations, every spray adds just a tiny bit more to the air.  Also in air fresheners are VOCs, Volatile Organic Compounds which are notoriously known for causing lung and heart problems, strokes, and cancer.  Many of the popular brands are also produced in plastic or metal cans that are not recyclable, thus causing more pollution inside of a landfill.
