A lot of poachers are people who cannot find work elsewhere and are driven to do it in order to feed their families. With education these people can be taught to become rangers and earn their living fairly.
As ollied123 mentions, poachers are usually desperate to make money, as the job is both illegal and dangerous. Poaching is a sign of a weak economy in most cases, because poachers cannot find other work or work that is as lucrative as illegal work. Poaching is also caused by greed and ego. Many people poach in America (be it out of season or illegally or in a restricted area) because they want to get the biggest game and want to do so without the challenges of competition (whether the animal is in season) or the challenge of wildlife restrictions.
