Tourism contributes to emissions especially when people fly to their destinations. The tourism industry is also notorious for its overuse of water for hotels, golf courses and pools. It puts pressure on local communities as tourists often demand hot water and foods that may be in short supply. Building hotels and resorts degrades the environment. Cruise lines produce some 70,000 tons of waste in the Caribbean alone, and hikers in mountainous areas often litter the trails with plastic bottles and other garbage.
