Were underwater robots successful in helping to clean the oil spill?

The Gulf of Mexico clean-up has not really occurred with significant help from underwater robots. It has mainly been the work of skimmers and tankers (and many, many human volunteers and workers) to separate the released oil from Gulf waters.

However, underwater robots were instrumental in providing information to BP and agency officials who were working to repair the well and contain the leak. The underwater conditions were such that humans would have been unable to repair the machinery on their own, necessitating the use of underwater robots.
