Were there hybrids built in the 90’s that failed because we were not ready to be green?

Hybrids became popular in the 1990s. That’s when the Prius came out and the Honda Insight.
There were far more fuel efficient cars in the 1970s and 1980s, but those quickly disappeared as the public stopped focusing on fuel efficiency as a whole. That’s also around the time more fuel-efficient imported cars became more popular.
There were hybrids that failed in the 1990s, however, including the GM EV1. That movie, Who Killed the Electric Car, was based on reality.
