Both American and Arctic peregrine falcons were once on the Endangered Species List. Both were removed; the former in 1999 and the latter in 1994. They were threatened by the use of the pesticide DDT, which made their eggshells too thin for the eggs to hatch properly. Currently, there are about 1,650 breeding pairs in the US and Canada and the range seems to be growing. They are still protected under CITES and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
