Were older cars better for the environment before we started putting all these computers in them?

No, not necessarily. Cars used to be less fuel efficient and more polluting. The disadvantage with modern cars, and their computerized brains, is that they are more prone to breaking down. When everything ran on belts and gears it was very difficult for some to get so worn out that the car would stop functioning, now one short circuit and your car becomes a lawn ornament. This of course has repercussions for the environment because more trashed cars means more waste, but generally car parts do get reused and recycled in many different ways.
