Were the old leather helmets padded?

Football helmets didn’t start out that way. Initially, they were just straps of thick leather that formed what was called a “head harness” in 1896. After a brief period of time (padding started being placed in the helmets between 1920 and 1940), the helmets evolved to having pads in them to keep the players from getting hurt. In 1948, school/professional team logos started appearing on the helmets to show spirit and allegiance. Since then, they have evolved to the helmets we know today.
