Were the land masses of Scotland and North America ever connected?

Yes; the complex collision between the core of North America and the Baltic heart of Europe resulted in the Appalachian-Caledonian mountains which extended from Alabama to Newfoundland, through the British Isles into Eastern Greenland and Western Norway. When the North Atlantic ocean opened, all these continental and mountainous areas were separated.

The North American and Baltic continents were combined previously as well; that separation created the Iapetus or proto-Atlantic ocean which closed with the collision described above (which was part of the assembly of Pangaea).
