“Natural living” is actually how humans have lived for most of the time we have been here. We have slowly become more and more unnatural with all of the artificial ingredients and man-made products. I think that it was just a matter of time until people would start to realize that we were becoming to artificial and industrial. Maybe the popularity of recreational drugs during the 70s allowed people to step back and see our society from a new point of view and realize that technology and materialism may not be the way to go.
You could certainly argue that case. The current trend is for people to be more environmentally aware, as we face catastrophic consequences from climate change if we don’t do anything about it. Hippies considered caring for the earth very important, and lived accordingly. I would say that Native Americans are another group to consider in this category. Of course they didn’t have the scientific knowledge we do now, but they considered it moral to disturb their environment and its creatures as little as possible. This is something we are struggling to do today.
