We hear about ecological successes, and publicized failures, but what are examples of what not to do?

It seems that our society has developed an adversarial relationship between people who are looking for reasons to diss ecological efforts, and others who want to give anything green a try. What lessons do they teach in the classrooms about what not to do in failed projects? Is there hope for learning from failures, or is ecology just becoming increasingly partisan?
