we have a Japanese ornamental cherry tree planted this May. I has developed black spots on some of the leaves and also now some leaves are turning yellow. What is causing this.

    It sounds much like the aptly named leaf spot. This is a fungi that grows on the leaves, till they fall, where it sinks into the soil and infects the rest of the tree. The best thing to do now would be to consult your local nursery, and see what sorts of fungicide they have. make sure that all the fallen infected leaves are taken away and destroyed.
