We found a reptile in our yard about 12 inches in length – it has a beige/tan body with a red face. We have no idea what it is. Any suggestions?

Does it resemble a lizard of some sort? Where do you live? Knowing the geographic location would be helpful. Perhaps it’s a skink? Does it look anything like this: http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/lizards/eumlat.htm ?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU RIGHT ON THE MONEY ITS EXACTLY WHAT WE SAW IN OUR YARD – WE HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 11 YEARS AND THIS WAS THE 1ST TIME WE HAVE EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. OUR HOME IS BY THE GUNPOWDER PARK ZIP CODE 21220. I’M NOW WONDERING SINCE MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR CUT DOWN A BIG TREE IN HIS YARD IF THIS SKINK WAS LIVING THERE-WE HAVE 3 DOGS ARE THEY OR MY HUSBAND & I IN ANY DANGER? DOES OR WILL IT BITE? IF SO WHAT SHOULD WE DO? MY DOGS PLAY IN THE YARD.

You, your husband, and the dogs should be okay. Skinks can bite and they can have a nasty taste if predators try to eat them, but they are not venomous.

Here’s some more info on them:
