As we develop more land will we need to switch to vertical farming to meet the demand for food?

Because vertical farming is still just in the planning stages, and has yet to yield any real results, it is difficult to say whether or not it will be a key factor in food supplies in the future.  It may be worth noting that we divert much of our food supply into creating bio-fuels, so I think this tells us we have enough food to go around.  In the event that we have a food crisis in our country, I imagine we would lower our production of bio-fuels before we make a strong push for vertical farming, a controversial method of farming to begin with.
