Is water use and pollution the worst part of mining?

Water pollution is probably the number one environmental problem with mining today. Industrial mining uses harsh an toxic chemicals which can leech into ground and surface waters and contaminate many drinking sources. Additionally, run-off from many mines is causing soil erosion and destroying many natural ecosystems, crippling many areas, particularly in third world countries where many poor and indigenous peoples are being abused and extorted by large corporations.
