Water temperature is very important to coral reefs. Bleaching can occur from either a temperature increase or decrease. A decrease of 3-5 degrees Celsius for only 5-10 days is enough to cause bleaching. Also, an increase of only 1-2 degrees Celsius can cause bleaching as well. Coral reefs operate within a very narrow temperature range.
