The water at the bottom of a quarry has been through layers and layers of rock, so a certain amount of contamination is bound to happen. Luckily, the water can be treated. Like any water found out and about in nature, it is best to treat the water before consuming it (unless you want to have a very upset stomach). A limestone quarry in Minnesota is currently pumping water from a quarry and treating the water so it can be public drinking water.

On the other hand, sometimes that water in a quarry has been through layers and layers of rock which can sometimes serve as a filtration system for the water, actually enhancing its quality. But surface runoff could contaminate it as well as things in the groundwater.
