Was the world better off when we used paper bags in our grocery store?

No.  The “paper or plastic?” debate is a complicated one, and while there’s no clear winner (besides canvas bags) there are significant indications that paper bags do a lot, if not the same amount of, damage to the environment as plastic bags because of the forestry required and the energy and fossil fuels required to harvest, create, and recycle paper bags.  In fact, if we used plastic bags truly responsibly by re-using each one until the end of its life and then recycling it, they might be better for the environment than paper bags.
