Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals, writes that the first factory farm arose in 1923, when Celia Steele found a way to keep her chickens alive through the seasons by keeping them indoors with vitamins. She was able to keep ten times as many birds this way. After that, factory farming in the U.S. really took off after the discovery of antibiotics.
