Originally, no. Over the past 10,000 years various salt lakes have formed in the Salton basin intermittently. The current Salton Sea was formed in 1901, as the result of a breach in a man made canal from the Colorado River. The original intent of the canal was to irrigate the valley that the Sea ultimately filled. It’s formation was not just accidental, but also ironic.
