Was Michael Jackson a green advocate?

Although Jackson is more well-known for his humanitarian, equal-rights efforts, many of his songs had a strain of environmental advocacy in them. The new documentary This Is It shows him during his last shows, pleading with his fans to do their part to save the environment. His song “Heal the World” references the poor treatment of animals, specifically chimpanzees, while “Earth Song” is a wish both for peace and a better treatment of the planet. He also took part in the soundtracks for the Free Willy movies, which are about the problems with keeping wild animals captive. Though green concerns were never the causes he was most outspoken for, he was very aware of such issues.

Michael Jackson was a contributor to the Jane Goodall Institute, one of the goals of which is to “create a worldwide network of young people who have learned to care deeply for their human community, for all animals and for the environment, and who will take responsible action to care for them.”
