Was it really necessary to euthanize Canada geese after the Hudson plane crash? Are their plans to kill more birds to “make the skies safer”?

In areas where bird populations are high, bird strikes with airplanes are not uncommon. When it is a question of public safety vs bird populations, many airports will shoot birds if they feel that it is an endangerment to the airplanes. However, with increasing concern for bird populations, many airports are now using ‘scare tactics’ to discourage birds from coming into dangerous areas. This may include flares or loud noises. Most airports have some sort of a wildlife management plan that outlines their policies for accomodating local birds and wildlife if you are curious abou the practices of a particular airport
