I was unable to find anything on the internet confirming that India was once half forested. Estimates of its current proportion of forests range from about 22% down to Wikipedia‘s 12%, although the latter statistic refers specifically to dense forests. Interestingly, the government’s official forest policy states that should cover at least 33% of the land.
In the 1990-2000 decade, India gained forest every year; I would imagine and hope that that trend has continued in the new millennium.
