Homer is traditionally said to be the author of the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. However, his true existence is debatable. While ancient Greeks believed that Homer was an historical individual, modern scholars are skeptical due to no reliable biographical information from classical antiquity. The works credited to Homer represent the culmination of many centuries of oral story-telling and a well-developed formula of poetic composition.
There is a great deal of debate over this as Homer is a figure who lived (possibly) in the time where literature was passed down orally. Some scholars say that he was an individual, others say the poems attributed to him were “written” by many people and others debate his existence at all. Unfortunately, there is not much in terms of concrete evidence in this matter.
