Yes, the earth was covered completely by ice several hundred million years ago, geologists say. The only life were simple plants and some bacteria. Then, volcanos erupted everywhere which released a lot of CO2 and created a global warming effect that melted much of the ice. This frozen/warming cycle occurred several times every few million years. The evidence for this is found in the types of fossils geologists find in very old rocks, although technically, this idea is just a theory.
