I spend much time in a rural area of central Panama. Coffee is grown locally and harvested by the residents. I have seen people pay for services, such as cutting of the grass or help with the children, with coffee beans. Other people will trade a chicken or vegetables for coffee beans. This is occurring right now, in 2010, and surely occurred more in the past.
