2010 was the warmest year in India since they began recording the temperatures in 1901. Many Indian scientists have stated temperatures in general have been above average this past decade; they cite the increase of green gases from India’s growing industry as the cause. However, this year scientists in the India Meteorological Department, National Atmosphere Research Laboratory, pinpointed the 2011 heatwaves to an anti-cyclone that stayed over India from March to May, a season that usually brings some cooling showers. THe front blocked streams that come from the Mediterranean, so stronger than usual heat prevailed.
The front can be seen below on this map made by the Meteorological Department.
