The biological definition of a living organism is one that has a metabolism, maintains homeostasis (its ability to regulate its own internal environment and maintain a stable condition), has the capacity to grow, responds to stimuli, reproduces by cellular division, and adapts to the environment via natural selection.
Unfortunately, opinions differ on whether viruses are “alive.” They have genes, evolve, and reproduce, all of which are traits of living organisms. However, they lack the basic cellular structure, do not have their own metabolism, and their reproduction requires the use of a host. They also do not evolve via natural selection.
