Is vine charcoal bad for the environment?

Vine charcoal is really no different for the environment than lump or briquettes.  Burning charcoal in any fashion releases greenhouse gases like CO2 into the environment contributing to climate change. The advantage of charcoal, however, is that it was once a tree or plant of some sort which was taking carbon out of the atmosphere. Theoretically charcoal emissions are offset somewhat by the life of the plant.
