Is oil used to create electricity?

Only a tiny proportion of electricity generation — abour 2% to 3% – comes from burning oil. About half comes from coal, 20% from nuclear power, and 20% from natural gas. The rest comes from hydropower, wind, biomass, geothermal, etc – about 1% to 2% each.

Yes, oil can be used to generate electricity but just like rigibson noted, only some percentage is needed.
