The U.S. already exports a fair amount of coal to Asia. In 2011, countries in Asia imported over 27 million tons of coal from the United States. Coal exports to the region are increasing; the 2011 figures for coal exports to Asia represent a 53.8 percent increase from 2010.
Several port construction projects have been proposed in Oregon and Washington in order to expand and expedite Asian access to American coal. If the ports are constructed, they could allow for the export of approximately 100 million additional tons of coal to the region per year.
