Algae based fuels are still new to the U.S. and research is still being done to determine whether or not the greenhouse emissions released by the fuel make it a viable alternative. That being said, in November 2011, Continental Airlines flight was the first commercial flight to be powered by a 60/40 combination of jet fuel/algae. Alaska Airlines, too is beginning a ‘pilot’ program combining biofuels with standard jet fuels in order to reduce emissions.
