Is the UK trying to support itself with 100 percent renewable energy?

So far the UK has made no commitment to power itself completely with renewable energy.  Rather, and despite rhetoric from the UK government about making deep cuts in pollution, it seems that the country currently plans to continue burning coal for power indefinitely.  James Hansen, one of the world’s most respected scientists, has asked the UK government to become one of the first nations in the world to set a moratorium of new coal-fired power plants, because burning coal for electricity and industry is the single largest contributor to global warming worldwide.  So far, however, the UK government has not agreed to any such moratorium, or to phasing out the country’s existing coal plants.  Climate activists in the UK are pressing the government to do a better job on this issue, but as yet the UK has not responded to the degree that Hansen and others believe is necessary.
