This depends on the composition of the balloon. Some studies indicate that latex balloons, which is a 100% natural substance, degrade in the environment about as fast as a leaf from an oak tree. They are also degraded in water, and organisms attack rubber almost immediately.
However, a mylar ballon was found in the intestines of a whale in Virginia. The balloon was suspected as the cause of death. Mylar, a substance developed by NASA, is not bio-degradeable and can have adverse environmental effects. It’s easily identified because balloons made with mylar typically have a metallic finish.
