    Americans purchase 7 billion greeting cards every year.  If you take that into consideration with how many people actually keep their cards longer than a week or so, you can imagine that a greeting card has a pretty short life span until it is sent to either a landfill or hopefully to be recycled.  A much more environmentally-friendly option is to send electronic cards.  These produce no paper waste with an envelope or an actual card.
