Hospitals in the US have very stringent health and safety requirements (as do most hospitals world-wide). Disposable needles and syringes should be deposited in “puncture resistant” receptacles after they are used. Reusable needles or other surgical implements are cleaned in a chlorine bleach solution which quickly kills HIV/AIDs and hepatitis B. Is it possible that you were not watching the nurse remove the wrapper, or that the nurse removed it before you entered the room?
