Bottled water generates roughly 1.5 million tons of expended plastic each year! Some of that might get recycled, but most does not.
Plastic takes a long time to decompose, and many plastics do not decompose at all.
On top of that, there is a ton of energy expended in the purifying and bottling of water, and then the transport. Unfortunately, it seems that using local bottling plants to cut down on the transportation energy expenditure usually decreases the quality of the water.
Re-using plastic waters can be dangerous because of the chemicals in the plastic, so they must be disposed of after one use.
