    An important step towards legitimizing that kind of discovery would be to have your work rigorously peer reviewed by an impartial group of experts in your field—in this case, chemistry.  Peer reviewed journals such as PLoS ONE uphold a certain standard of academic discipline and critical scrutiny, and will help legitimize your work in the eyes of other professionals.  Crackpots, on the other hand, tend to make extraordinary claims which require extraordinary evidence (that they often don’t have, or that is misleading and uninformed).
