Trees are important for the environment because they provide oxygen, provide shelter for animals, their root systems help to circulate ground water and soil, they filter air, provide as a noise, wind, and sun block, and many more. As far as their importance to owls, it depends on the species of owl. Some owls don’t make use of trees, some use them for nesting, keeping themselves and their young away from predators, some eat bugs that live in trees, some build their nests out of small branches from trees etc.
