Treated salt water is a viable solution to the worlds fresh water shortage. However, desalination plants would have to triple by 2020 if they were to accommodate the world’s population. Unfortunately, desalination is not a cheap solution, with fresh water being a much cheaper solution in the areas that have access. The process is also harmful to the environment if the brine waste product is not handled responsibly. Desalination plants are also dependent on fossil fuels, one of the main causes of pollution and water shortages in the first place. However, there is exploration and development in ways to make desalination a more viable water provider by utilizing renewable energy for power.
