Riding a bus is better for the environment in the sense that you spare the atmosphere automobile emissions from a separate vehicle. Traditionally buses do have higher emissions than an automobile because they are much larger and generate much more exhaust. However if the bus has 30 passengers, and we assume that even half of those passengers would otherwise be driving, the overall emissions are much less when those people use transit.
It really depends on the type of bus and the fuel that it runs on. If you are driving your own private bus, then no it won’t be better for the environment. However, there are many energy efficient busses out there. This would be a great alternative to owning and driving a car. It may not be as convenient, but the good that you will do for the environment will be rewarding in itself.
