Is transportation of goods worse than the goods themselves for the environment?

In some cases, absolutely.  This is a big debate with food.  For example, it could actually be better for the environment to eat locally-grown, non-organic produce than it is to ship organic produce in from around the world.  But there’s no clear answer here, especially when you consider the possibility that some goods can/could be transported by bio-diesel or veggie oil (but currently aren’t).
