Thermal mass is the concept that something will absorb heat when the surrounding environment is warmer than itself and release heat when the surrounding environment is cooler. By using materials that change temperature slowly, a building can stay cool during the day and warm at night. This can be done by choosing certain building materials instead of others. Water also changes temperature slowly, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. So, coastal areas have less variation in temperature and many people prefer to live there.
