There are precautions that can be taken if you know you are in a flood area, that helps to prevent the likelihood of additional pollution to the flood waters. You can place hazardous materials in a high, dry area where the floodwaters will be less likely to reach them. Such materials include: drain cleaner, furniture stripper, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, propane tanks, pesticides and fertilizers. Also, if you have a heating fuel tank, its best to try to call a distributor to take the fuel from your tank before floodwaters can reach your house, because floodwaters may cause the tank to become unstable and tip over or leak into the water and office or home area.
