I don’t know that “getting back” is the best terminology because there is biodiversity that has been lost and will not come back, but yes overall. There are many movements in the US, like the heirloom tomato movement, that are encouraging biodiversity in the foods we eat. There has been rising concerns about biodiversity as more and more people turn to eating organic because very genetically targeted foods are very susceptible to diseases and pests, which is why most of our food today has so many pesticides on it. Increasing biodiversity increases the plant’s natural ability to fight off pests/diseases but does not produce the same quality of produce every time like the genetically modified food does.
The leading cause of loss of biodiversity is loss of habitat so adding biodiversity means that we need to coserve land for agriculture and not degrade it with a lot of pesticides and fertilizers. The secound leading cause of loss of biodiversity is introduction of nonnative species, or exotic species. Much of our food today is not native to the region and when we try to grow things that are not normally there it limits the natural biodiversity of the area by taking over an area and limmiting native plant growth. Another way to increase biodicersity would be to stop planting geneticaly modified plants. They have a “terminator gene” which makes the plant infertile after a short time so that you must buy more seeds the next planting. If that spreads ot native plants then they end up dying sooner too. Less support of organic farming means more monocropping, chemicals, soil loss, and loss of biodiversty.
