Is there a way to tell how deep the water below a waterfall is?

First, the water below a waterfall is technically called a plunge pool, plunge basin, or stream pool.

Second, you can measure the depth of a body of water with a line and a Secchi Disk. You attach the Secchi Disk to the end of the line and drop it in to the water until the line hits the bottom and goes taut. When you pull the line back up, you can then measure all the wet line to get the depth of the pool.
