Scientists are looking into methods of harnessing the power of photosynthesis into generating electricity. The Cyanobacteria is being examined to be a part of this venture, because of the photosynthetic reactions that take place in the organism. This might offer the possibility of capturing energy output of this bacteria at the micro-level, which gives enormous potential for a large scale production.
One could argue that plant based biofuels (sugar cane, corn, algea for example) already does use photosynthesis as a means of large scale renewable energy production. Without these plants photosynthesizing, they would never grow into the plants that are produced into biofuel.
