The best way to get rid of food waste sustainably is to compost it. In a compost bin, food material is usually mixed with leaves, grass clippings and other organic material, plus a bit of fresh soil, and allowed to break down into organic dirt that can be used as plant fertilizer. Even if you don’t have a yard or outdoor area you can compost in your home (see the link below). Composting is better than throwing food waste in the garbage, because food that ends up in the trash is taken to a landfill, where it decays underground without access to oxygen – a process that produces the heat trapping gas methane, which contributes to global warming. Food scraps in a compost bin have access to oxygen, and decompose without producing significant amounts of methane.
