Yes. This process is called carbon sequestration, and is considered by many to be an important part of fighting global warming. Natural processes are responsible for some sequestration – fossil fuels, which are essentially fossilized, condensed plant material (which contains carbon formerly from the atmosphere), is one such process. Human technologies are still in their infancy, and no sequestration is yet making a significant difference in atmospheric carbon.
