Is there a way to filter rain water to drink it?

Yes, and it is simpler than one might think.  Basically, using a rainwater catchment system, rainwater is collected into a big vessel filled with sand in the middle.  Water enters the top where microbes will worm, feeding on organic matter and other impurities.  The rest of the impurities are filtered out through the several feet of sand, resulting in potable water at the bottom.

If you’re going to give this a go and are a bit questionable about the water quality, it is always safe to boil the resulting water before drinking.
